Do I have a Health Insurance Marketplace Statement?

Learn if you need to report details of your health insurance on your yearly tax return.

Some people who purchased their health insurance through the health insurance marketplace (Washington Health Plan Finder) received a tax credit called the Advanced Premium Tax Credit. This tax credit lowers the cost of your monthly health insurance premium. If you received this tax credit, your health insurer will send you Form 1095-A Health Insurance Marketplace Statement. This form must be included on your yearly tax return.

Does everyone receive Form 1095-A?

No. Only people receiving the Advanced Premium Tax Credit receive this form.

If you were offered health insurance or had other health insurance such as from your employer, you may receive other forms. Form 1095-B Health Coverage and Form 1095-C Employer-Provided Health Insurance Offer and Coverage should be kept for your records, but are not required to file your yearly tax return.

What is Form 1095-A?

Form 1095-A reports a few important pieces of information:

  • The names of the people on the insurance policy
  • The monthly cost of your health insurance
  • The monthly amount of tax credit you received

Why do I need form 1095-A?

When you signed up for your health insurance plan on WA Health Plan Finder, you provided an estimate of how much money you would make in the upcoming year. Based on this income, you received a specific amount of the Advanced Premium Tax Credit. However, since it was a guess, you don’t know how much of the tax credit you should really get until the year is over.

Your yearly tax return will calculate how much of the tax credit you should have received. Then, it compares how much of the Advanced Premium Tax Credit you actually received. If you did not receive enough, you will get more credit. However, if you received too much of the credit in advance, you have to repay it.

If I received too much Advanced Premium Tax Credit, do I have to repay the full amount?

If you received too much Advanced Premium Tax Credit, you may not have to repay the full amount. The repayment amount is limited based on how much money you made. If you made less than 400% of the federal poverty limit, your repayment amount is capped.

How do I know if I should have this form?

Your health insurer will be able to answer this question, but here are a few tips:

  • If you signed up for a plan on WA Health Plan finder, you may receive this form
  • If you are on Apple Health (state Medicaid), you will not receive this form
  • If you are insured through your employer, you will not receive this form

You might have had more than one insurance plan during the year. It’s possible you could receive more than one 1095-A form.

How do I find my 1095-A?

WA Health Plan Finder has instructions on how to get your 1095-A here: https://www.wahealthplanfinder.org/us/en/my-account/tax-documents/get-your-1095-tax-form.html

If you worked with an insurance broker or navigator, they may be able to help you get this document.
